Breast Cancer Now have already invested an astonishing £255m in breast cancer research and are going from strength to strength. Currently they are funding over 80 research projects to discover how breast cancer can be prevented, how lives can be saved and to help people live well with, and beyond the disease.
Not only is research a huge part of what they do, they run large scale campaigns to raise money and awareness and offer hands-on support in a range of accessible ways including a specialist helpline, educational webinars & live talks, support groups & networks and an interactive app for daily advice on how to move forward after breast cancer. They also work directly with MPs and healthcare professionals to improve breast cancer services.
As one in seven people in the UK will develop breast cancer in their lifetime*, it is important that we are all aware of the signs and symptoms to look out for:
- A lump or swellingin the breast, upper chest or armpit
- A change to the skin, such as puckering or dimpling
- A change in the colour of the breast– the breast may look red or inflamed
- A nipple change, for example it has become pulled in (inverted)
- Rash or crustingaround the nipple
- Unusual liquid(discharge) from either nipple
- Changes in size or shapeof the breast
