Today is National Yoga Day, and we've taken a look into how CBD and Yoga can be the perfect match.
Milk and cookies. Wine and cheese. Tacos and margaritas. Until now, these were our favourite pairings. But we’re ready to add a new one to the list; CBD and yoga.
If you struggle to switch off and zone out during a yoga class, you’re not alone. We often head to the mat to forget about our problems and experience a few moments of blissful relaxation, but the endless stream of thoughts can get in the way.
Pairing a yoga class with your daily dose of CBD oil could help to upgrade your experience and put you on the path to improved wellbeing. Yoga is the ultimate opportunity to check in with your body, and CBD can help you to increase this self-awareness.
It might seem like CBD and yoga are simply neighbouring squares on a 2022 trends bingo card, but there is actually a very rich history to explore.
The History of Yoga and Cannabis
CBD and yoga go way back. Yoga originated in northern India where marijuana was considered to be a sacred plant. In Hinduism, wandering holy men called Sadhus would use marijuana to achieve enlightenment.
It was commonly combined with yoga practice to deepen their spiritual connection and to find inner peace and inspiration. These spiritual practices continue to this day.
Since cannabis is not legal in the UK, getting high at your local yoga studio might not be a practical option. But CBD oil could offer the perfect alternative.
CBD is a legal, naturally occurring compound extracted from the cannabis plant. It does not offer the same psychoactive experience as THC, so it won’t get you high. This means that it is completely legal and also very safe for most healthy adults to use.
While it might not alter your mental state, it does offer some incredible health benefits when used consistently. And it could also help to seriously upgrade your next yoga class. Here are three ways CBD might help improve your yoga practice.
CBD is a mindful addition to your self-care routine. When taking CBD, we recommend that you check in with your body and explore how it makes you feel. This is one of the best ways to determine if you are taking the right dose.
When it comes to hitting the yoga mat, being self-aware is an essential part of connecting with your breath and the movement. Increased self-awareness and the ability to stay in the moment will help you develop a deeper understanding of your body and how it moves.
Find your Inner Peace
Many people feel anxious when they head into a group class. You might be anxious about your appearance, your clothing, or feeling like an absolute beginner in a class full of experts.
But CBD might be effective in helping you to take control of your feelings. Anecdotally, we know that CBD has a calming effect. While not a treatment or cure for anxiety, it’s a helpful tool to have in your toolbox to dial back the anxious thoughts when they start racing.
Improve your Balance
We don’t mean finally achieving Tree Pose without wobbling over. When we talk about balance, it’s more like your sense of inner balance. CBD supports the endocannabinoid system, which plays an essential role in maintaining homeostasis (or balance) throughout the body.
Many people turn to CBD to help support their journey to improved wellness. And we can’t think of a better pairing on this journey than CBD and yoga.
Move with Ease
Pain, inflammation, sore joints, tight tendons and injuries can all make it more difficult to move with ease. A sedentary lifestyle can lead to further complications, so finding a way to move your body is essential on your journey to wellness. Yoga is the perfect low-impact exercise to add to your routine to gently ease you back into movement.
CBD, like yoga, can help us achieve emotional and physical balance, also known as homeostasis. CBD is widely considered to be a safe supplement for healthy adults to enjoy daily. So if you feel like you’ve tried everything, CBD oil might be next on your list.
How to Take CBD Before Yoga
If you’re planning to use CBD before yoga, we’d recommend adding it to your daily routine, rather than simply using it before you hit the mat. This is because CBD is best used consistently to support the endocannabinoid system.
If you’re new to CBD, start with a low dose (around 10mg per day) and observe how this makes you feel. We wouldn’t recommend using CBD for the first time before a yoga class, particularly not a challenging class like Bikram yoga or an intense vinyasa class. Try taking it before bed so you are in comfortable surroundings.
You can slowly increase your daily CBD dose until you have reached the desired effect. Once you know your daily dose, you don’t need to increase over time as you will not build up a tolerance.
If you’re taking CBD oil to support your yoga practice, we’d recommend taking it around 15-30 minutes before a yoga class to experience the benefits. You could also take a CBD edible (like our delicious gummy sweets) around 15 minutes before your class for a quick energy burst.
