CBD Coffee: What are the Benefits of CBD Oil in Coffee?

Love Hemp have teamed up with RiSE Coffee Box to showcase specialty coffee and the benefits of CBD coffee

We will explore what makes CBD coffee a healthy alternative to regular coffee, how to make it at home and why speciality coffee is perfect for making your CBD coffee at home!

What is CBD coffee?

Simply put, CBD coffee is coffee that contains cannabidiol (CBD) which is an ingredient found in the cannabis plant. This is not to be mistaken with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which can make a person feel ‘high’.

By drinking CBD coffee, drinkers have been able to reap the health benefits in a tasty drink. Most people enjoy a morning cup of coffee as a great way to start your day. Now, many people are adding their CBD oil to the coffee to give them that extra boost in the morning.

CBD has been touted for having a variety of health benefits including balancing mood, supporting a good night’s sleep and boosting overall wellness. The science behind this new trend of adding CBD to coffee is somewhat inconclusive, having had no specific studies done, but those who drink it report more energy and lower jitters than experienced with drinking coffee alone. Interesting!

CBD aside, there are a number of health benefits to drinking coffee which you can read here, but being aware of how much caffeine is in coffee is also important.

So, why add CBD to your coffee and what additional benefits does it offer?

What are the health benefits of CBD coffee?

Science hasn’t yet given a conclusive stance on the health benefits of drinking CBD coffee.

Coffee is a stimulant and CBD can promote a sense of calm. That being said, most people love the combination as they get the caffeine uplift but less jitters. And that’s not all, here are a few health benefits of adding CBD to your coffee:

  • Overall mood support. Coffee has been found to increase levels of serotonin while CBD can promote a sense of calm.
  • Coffee in general has been shown to elevate mood and the mix of the two is reportedly a great way to start the day.
  • Brain support by supporting concentration and clarity.

How to make CBD coffee at home?

The easiest way to turn your coffee into a CBD coffee is by adding a few drops of CBD oil to your normal cup. Try our Love Hemp 1,200mg CBD Oil, or our Love Hemp CBD Oil 3,000mg, depending on your strength preference. If you fancy a change to your morning coffee routine we have a few different flavours available.

We recommend you use speciality coffee, as this is a higher grade of coffee that is more sustainable and provides a more rounded, flavourful taste.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to make CBD coffee at home

  1. Make your coffee (here are a few tips on brewing your coffee,)
  2. Add your milk and sugar (if you don't take it black)
  3. Add 15mg of oil
  4. Grab a spoon and mix thoroughly.

A more developed way to make coffee at home with CBD is to infuse the CBD oil with coffee granules inside a cafetiere and let it steep with hot water for 5-7 minutes before pressing down and pouring. Be sure not to use fully boiling water though, as this can negatively impact the flavour of the coffee and it can break down the efficacy of the CBD.

Newcomers to CBD should only add in around 15-20 mg initially to ensure the drink works for them and be mindful of how it makes you feel. Only up to dosage when you are used to drinking the coffee.

What is specialty coffee?

When it comes to specialty coffee, the clue is in the name. It is a way to produce coffee where excellence is considered at every level of production

For a coffee to be deemed specialty it must reflect quality from every step of the coffee creation process - from production, the green buyer, the roaster, the barista and of course you, the consumer.

Specialty coffee (also known as speciality coffee) is a lot different from your usual coffee beans. A similar comparison would be regular beer vs craft beer. You can pick up a can of Heineken for £1.50 or you could opt for a £4 Beavertown brewery lager, with beautiful design, amazing flavour and award-winning quality.

What is specialty coffee? According to the Specialty Coffee Association; “Specialty coffee can consistently exist through the dedication of the people who have made it their life's work to continually make quality their highest priority. This is not the work of only one person in the lifecycle of a coffee bean; specialty can only occur when all of those involved in the coffee value chain work in harmony and maintain a keen focus on standards and excellence from start to finish. This is no easy accomplishment, and yet because of these dedicated professionals, there are numerous specialty coffees available right now, across the globe, and likely right around the corner from you.”

Specialty coffee must score above 80 according to the SCA scoring system and is generally considered very good quality when scoring between 80-85, and excellent quality between 85-90 points. Geisha coffee (that we talk about here) would fall into this latter category. Coffee you find inside your RiSE coffee box or on our online shop generally range between 84-87.

How is speciality coffee different from store bought coffee?

Commodity grade coffee, generally found in the supermarket, would always score well below 80 and instant coffee wouldn’t even make the scale.

The main difference between specialty coffee and coffee you find in the supermarket is related to price and volume.

Supermarket coffees tend to be mass produced coffee which sits on the shelves as a commodity. This coffee is bought in huge bulk and therefore has to have a long shelf life. Specialty coffee is carefully picked by the roasters, a lot of thought goes into the beans they select, the defects, quality and tasting notes they experience. Speciality coffee is also roasted to order, and is therefore as fresh as it gets.
